Video A Great Place To Be

Alma Mater

Kansas. A great place to be.

Let's start from the beginning. A band of contrarians -- opposed to slavery, promoters of freedom for all -- settled a western outpost between the Kaw and Wakarusa rivers in the 1850s. After the town was platted, a great university was begun on Hogback Ridge, high above the river valley and below a boundless, expansive blue sky.

Then great things began to happen here.

Unlimited sources of inspiration and innovation exist among these hills and valleys of Kansas. The inventor of basketball started a tradition here. The man who discovered vitamins A and D graduated. Helium was extracted from gas for the first time. The first African-American woman to entertain at the White House graduated a year before a young man who discovered Pluto enrolled.

Future astronauts were launched into their careers, along with artists, business leaders, Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winners, presidential candidates and governors, two of them women. National championships have been won -- and lost. And many pharmacists, teachers, nurses, doctors, musicians, artisans, journalists, architects, engineers and lawyers are proud Jayhawks for life.

An ideal campus, simultaneously historic and wireless. Next to a metropolis, bordering the rolling prairie. Nationally ranked programs, internationally renowned research. High-tech, hands-on and interactive classrooms. A top 10 venue for the performing arts -- and athletics.

Tranquil mornings, a diverse exciting nightlife. Truly a "castle on a hill," as one scribe wrote a century after Whitman.

Now for the future. What can you do at KU?

The opportunities are boundless.

Do something.
